This week I’ve been thinking a lot about a line I read in this article by
.The article is well worth a read, but just one line from it is what’s been stuck in my head (and all over the pages of my journal) this week.
Alex points out that writing isn’t just about the words we produce, or even the outcomes of publishing those words.
It’s about who we become when we sit down to write.
That’s it. That’s the line. That’s what I’ve been pondering this week.
Who do I become when I sit down to write?
And here’s what I’ve realised.
I become curious, open-minded, analytical, and thoughtful.
I become someone who’s eager to gain new perspectives, learn new things, and join the dots to make a whole new picture.
I become someone who looks at the complexities and nuances of situations, events and issues.
I become someone who falls down a research hole and comes up with new ideas, knowledge, and insight.
I become a person who’s seeking a deeper understanding and finding compassion for those with different experiences and viewpoints.
I become someone who’s looking for solutions, even if I don’t always find them.
I wish I was this person all the time. I’m striving to be more like her. But at least I have an easy technique to access her. I just sit down to write.
Writing is about so much more than words on a page. Who do you become when you’re writing?
